The Makua cave entrance overlooks the coast heading to Kaena Point. The people who were settled there at the time of Kamehameha I’s conquest of the islands grew the sweet potato as their main starch, and were master navigators. Marae Bay, known today as Pokai Bay was a site of a major agricultural temple and navigational academy. These people believed man also made spiritual journeys such as into the next life, which began at Kaena Point. Fishing is a past time of many then and now, and still being practiced today.
